Special conditions:

Lactating Dairy Cattle - Influenza testing

  • Negative influenza test within 7 days. Only exception is import direct to slaughter. Include test collection date, result, lab, and accession number on the CVI.
  • Test results must be current and complete and must be included on the CVI. Cattle may not be imported while influenza tests are pending.
  • Lactating dairy cattle from herds with a positive influenza test result within the last 30 days are ineligible for import
  • Lactating dairy cattle with clinical signs consistent with influenza are ineligible for import
  • Beef cattle, bison, and non-lactating dairy cattle, including dry cows, heifers, bulls, and calves, are not required to be tested.
  • Contact the import coordinator if lactating dairy cattle will be originating from a herd with current participation in the USDA HPAI Dairy Herd Status Program or if more than 30 lactating dairy cattle will be moving in a group.

Lactating Cattle - Influenza Testing - Fairs, shows and Exhibition * A negative influenza test is required to return to the home herd if the exhibition or show they attend exceeds 10 days in length.

All Cattle Returning from a fair/show/exhibition

If the cattle are scheduled to return after the date the CVI expires from a fair/show/exhibition, a new CVI issued by a local veterinarian licensed by and accredited in that state and must meet the normal import requirements is required.

Notice: Minnesota is phasing out the acceptance of paper CVIs.

Effective January 1, 2026, export CVIs must be submitted in an electronic format on a National Association of State Animal Health Officials (NASAHO) approved form. Paper CVIs will no longer be accepted for MN origin movements.

APPLICABLE REGULATIONS FOR THIS MOVE

  1. Official identification required for all ages in this group. If the group contains calves at the side of a dam they must be identified.

  2. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian 30 days or less prior to entry, with official ID numbers recorded on or attached to the CVI and must include the complete destination address.

  1. NUES 9 tags (official ID only for tags applied before 11/5/2024)

    • 'Bright' tags
    • OCV/Bangs tags (orange)
    • USDA metal tags
  2. AIN tags

    • '840' prefix RFID
    • '840' prefix visual only tags (official ID only for tags applied before 11/5/2024)
    • '900' series (mfr. codes) and "USA" prefix or American ID (official ID only for tags applied before 3/11/2015)
